Interview With Series Artist, John McCrea

Garth Ennis, writer of DC’s popular Preacher and Hitman titles, and artist John McCrea, whom Garth teams with on Hitman, are two of the hottest creators in the industry today. With Garth having won almost every major award in the comics field and John quickly gaining legions of fans with his unique, exciting style of storytelling it’s only natural that they would decide to join forces again to collaborate on a project that’s both personal and a great deal of fun for the two of them, the four-issue mini-series Dicks—a spotlight title this month from Caliber Comics. Dicks editor Joe Pruett recently sat down with artist John McCrea to talk a bit about the upcoming mini-series.

JP: In your own words, John, could you give the reader a quick summary of what Dicks is all about?

JMc: Dicks is the sequel to For A Few Troubles More which is the sequel to Troubled Souls, both of which were published by Fleetway. It’s the story of two eejits living in Belfast, who decide to become private detectives. It involves swearing, drinking, sheep violence, sex zombies, inbreeding and other politically correct subjects, all handled with the sensitivity you’ve come to expect from your favorite creative team.

JP: How do you approach a book like Dicks as opposed to your work on Hitman?

JMc: Dicks is just plain silly, and I’m drawing it in a very cartoony style, having fun with it and churning it out at an obscene rate. I’m just having fun.

JP: Are the characters in Dicks based on any real people that you and Garth know?

JMc: A lot of the situations and events are based on stories that Garth has overheard in pubs, read about or experienced first hand, and the jokes are all stolen from his dad. Visually, the main characters look like my brothers (short and fat, tall and geeky).

JP: I know a lot of readers minds are going to go immediately in the gutter when they read the title, especially coming from you guys. To set the record straight here, where did the title come from?

JMc: They’re private detectives, thus Dicks, get it? Dicks…oh, I give up.

JP: You and Garth seem to work together a lot. What’s the history behind your obviously successful relationship?

JMc: Garth was a school chum of my brother and he knew I wanted to break into comics (I’d done a few shorts for British Marvel). He pitched an idea to Fleetway and the fools bought it—it was Troubled Souls. Garth and I like the same sort of movies, have a similar sense of humor and like the same drink. Vital for a successful working relationship.

JP: Is this the last we’ll see of Dicks or do you and Garth have future plans for these guys?

JMc: We have future plans—Rock and Roll Dicks, Dicks in Space, Dicks to the Future—you get the idea.
