Ripper Mailbag

Dear Gary,

Yesterday, I bought Caliber Comics’ "Jack the Ripper" at Gosh Comic Shop in London (UK). I have been reading it this morning and am writing to thank you for an excellent effort.

I have never bought a book on the Jack the Ripper crimes because I believed they glamorized violence against women. Recently I have read a couple of Alan Moore’s series "From Hell" and whilst enjoying them, I would criticize Alan for "intellectualizing" the Jack the Ripper murders. Alan says the crimes "have never been about the murders, not the killer nor his victims. It’s about us - about our minds and how they dance." I think this is rubbish and wrong-headed.

You can’t and shouldn’t take the Jack the Ripper murders out of their social and economic context. That is why I enjoyed your comic version so much because it emphasized the social and economic environment in which the murders took place.

Once again many thanks for a great read.

Best Wishes,

Caliber,

Recently I picked up Jack the Ripper the comic.  I was very impressed.  It was accurate and had lots of information.  A job well done.  When you announced this issue, it was supposed to be part of a series called Crime Chronicles.  Is that still going to happen?  If so, I would like to recommend some others such as Lizzie Borden, Boston Strangler, and Countess Bathory.
